La piste d'Oslo convient bien aux coureuses africaines du 5000 m : un an après le record de Meseret Defar, championne olympique de la distance, c'est au tour de Tirunesh Dibaba d'établir une nouvelle marque mondiale. L'Ethiopienne a bouclé sa course en 14.11.15, soit cinq secondes de mieux que l'ancien record qui était de 14.16.63 ! "Ma soeur m'avait dit que je pouvais le faire car j'etais dans ma meilleure forme," a raconté Dibaba. “J'ai vu que j'étais un peu en retard après les 3 premiers kilomètres et j'ai donc acceléré. Je ne m'attendais pas à un tel record mais c'est très important pour moi. C'était mon rêve de détenir un record mondial de haut niveau. Dieu m'a aidé à réussir cette chose si extraordinaire."

The track of Oslo Stadium succeed to 5 000m african women runners : the champion Tirunesh Dibaba completed a demolition job on the World 5000 m record of her compatriot and Olympic champion, Meseret Defar. Defar's record of 14:16.63 was knocked out of sight by Dibaba who broke the tape in an astonishing 14:11.15. "My sister was telling me I could do it, that I am in my best shape ever" said Dibaba. I could see that I was off the pace after the first 3km, and therefore I pushed forward. I was not expecting such a record but it is very important to me. It was my dream to break a high quality World record. God helped me today to achieve something special."

Les meetings de Dakar et de Brazzaville ont offert, cette année encore, de belles performances. Le meeting Grand Prix IAAF de Dakar, qui s'est déroulé le 17 mai au Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor devant près de 40 000 spectateurs, a vu la championne d'Afrique du 400m, la Botswanaise Amantlé Montsho, confirmer son rang en dominant ses adversaires en 51.00. Quant à la Nigériane Osayami Oludamelo, elle a remporté le 100m féminin du meeting en 11.10.
Le Super Grand Prix CAA de Brazzaville, qui a eu lieu le 27 mai dans un stade comble, a vu la victoire de Stephan Buckland sur 200m en 20.74. Buckland a ainsi pris sa revanche sur Mpaung Thuso qui l'avait battu aux derniers Championnats d'Afrique. Au 100 m, le Nigerian Uchenna Emedolu, médaillé d'argent des Championnats d'Afrique, a remporté la course reine du meeting en 10.40.

For their 2008 edition, the Brazzaville and Dakar meetings produced some outstanding performances. The Dakar IAAF Grand Prix meeting, held at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor with nearly 40,000 spectators, confirmed the domination of Amantlé Montsho from Botswana, the new African Champion in 400m. Other performance recorded at Dakar : the Nigerian Osayami Oludamelo won the women's 100m in 11.10.
At the Brazzaville CAA Super Grand Prix in a crowded stadium, Stephan Buckland took revenge over Mpaung Thuso in 200m (20.74) who beat him at the 2008 African Championships. In the men's 100m, Vice African Champion, Uchenna Emedolu of Nigeria won the star race of the meeting in 10.40

Ils n'ont que 18 ans mais ont déjà prouvé leurs immenses talents : le Soudanais Abubaker Kaki et la Kenyane Pamela Jelimo ont pris en quelques mois leur place au plus haut niveau. Et à en juger par leur forme actuelle, ils pourraient revenir de Pékin avec de l'or autour du cou sur leur distance, le 800m. Kaki vient de remporter le Grand Prix de Bislett avec un temps de 1:42.69, battant ainsi le record du monde junior établi par le Kenyan Japhet Kimutai à Zürich en 1997 (1:43.64). Quant à Pamela Jelimo, elle nous a déjà fait découvrir l'étendue de son talent en remportant le titre de championne d'Afrique et en battant le record du monde junior à Berlin en 1:54.99. Au Grand Prix de Bislett, elle a encore triomphé en 1:55.41.

They are only 18 year-old and they have already shown their incredible athletics skills : Sudanese Abubaker Kaki and Kenyan Pamela Jelimo have been ranked among the best world athletes in only few months. They might come back from Beijing with a gold medal in the 800m regarding their current form. Kaki took the major plaudits running at the Bislett Grand Prix in 1:42.69. This performance removed the World Junior mark of 1:43.64 set by the Kenyan Japheth Kimutai back in Zürich in 1997. On her side, Pamela Jelimo is already under the spotlights. She took the African senior title in 800m and last week, she broke the World Junior record in Berlin in 1:54.99. She triumphed again at the Bislett Grand Prix thanks to a race in 1:55.41.
